  1. A principle of two or more things being equivalent or approximately so, to one another:
    1. (physics) the various equivalence principles
    2. (sciences) the equivalence of different interpretations or possible meanings, of the same measurements
    3. (taxation) the principle that the taxes paid by each should be equivalent to the benefits received, or the cost to provide them; compare benefit principle
    4. (actuarial science) a method of calculating in insurance or social security, where the obligations are equalized with the contributions
    5. (finance) the equalization of two cashflows
    6. (business) the principal of equal salaries for equivalent employees
