From Old Swedish æmbete, æmbite, æmbit, æmbeti, from Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, whence also ambassad (“embassy”), ambassadör (“ambassador”), amt (“county in Denmark”), German Amt, and Finnish ammatti.
