ķiploks

Borrowed from Middle Low German klüflōk (“garlic”) (cf. German Knoblauch, Dutch knoflook), with klüf- from Proto-Germanic *kliuban (“to split, to cut”) and -lōk “onion, leek” (cf. German Lauch, Dutch look, English leek), i.e., originally “split, segmented onion.” This loanword is first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries.[1]

1. garlic (herbaceous plant, sp. Allium sativum, with pungent edible bulbs)

   ziemas ķiploki ― winter garlic
