Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan [Term?]. Likely correspondent with Burmese ဟုတ် (hut, be so), Sichuan Yi (nge, be) and Tangut 𘟂 (*ŋwu², be). Compare with Lhao Vo ngad and Zaiwa ngvut. According to Guillaume Jacques, this Lolo-Burmese root may be cognate with Tibetan ངོ་མ (ngo ma, real, authentic).
