Borrowed from French Cameroun, from Portuguese Rio dos Camarões (“river of prawns, in reference to the Wouri river”); camarão itself is from Latin cammarus (“lobster”), ultimately from Ancient Greek κάμμαρος (kámmaros, “lobster”).
