βᾶρις

Ancient Greek

From Coptic ⲃⲁⲁⲣⲉ (baare), from Demotic br, from Egyptian bꜣjr (transport ship),

  1. baris (a type of flat-bottomed freighter used on the Nile in Ancient Egypt)
Declension
Descendants
  • English: baris (learned)
  • Latin: bāris (see there for further descendants)

Etymology 2

Probably from Illyrian, confronting βαυρία (bauría, house, dwelling) and βύριον (búrion, house). Might be related to Proto-Albanian *bhou̯onā (dwelling, abode), *bhunā (hut), but the lack of an -r- or even an initial -a- makes this unlikely.

  2. large house, tower
