Inherited from Byzantine Greek γκρεμνός (gremnós) with [mn] > [m][1] -also as the in medieval form ἐγκρεμός (engremós)-,[2] from Ancient Greek κρημνός (krēmnós) with pronunciation of accusative with liaison: τὸν (tòn) κρημνόν (krēmnón) (/ton kriˈmnon/ > /toŋɡriˈmnon/).[3] Compare to γκρεμνός and κρημνός (krimnós).
