Learned borrowing from Byzantine Greek ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, “balcony”),[1] from Koine Greek ἐξώστης (exṓstēs, “platform of ship or for docking ships”), from Ancient Greek sense "one who drives out". From stem ἐξωσ- of the ancient verb ἐξωθέω, ἐξωθῶ (exōthéō, exōthô, “force out”).[2]
