κάβαισος

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • κᾰ́βᾰσος (kábasos)

Etymology

In antiquity the word was analyzed as a compound of κάβος (kábos, a corn-measure) + αἶσα (aîsa, one's lot, share), which is of course nonsense. The meaning and structure of the word point to Pre-Greek origin. Furnée further connects καμασός (kamasós, abyss), which is possible but uncertain; the comparison with καμασήν (kamasḗn, fish) is even more uncertain.
