μάκελλα

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • μακέλη (makélē)

Etymology

The similarity with δίκελλα (díkella) cannot be coincidental but a convincing explanation has yet to be found. Armenian մարկեղ (markeġ, mattock) shows a remarkable similarity; it might be a loan from a common source. Unrelated are Lithuanian makaras (big stave) and Armenian մաճ (mač, plough tail). The variation "-ελλα/-έλη" shows a Pre-Greek origin.
