Inherited from Byzantine Greek μάστορας and Byzantine Greek μαΐστωρ (maḯstōr), from Hellenistic μαγίστωρ, μάγιστρος (“official of 3rd century”), from Latin magister.[1][2] Also see μήστωρ (mḗstōr, “adviser, counsellor”).
