φορίνη

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • πυρίνη (purínē)

Etymology

Without cognates neither in Greek nor in other languages. A remote similarity is shown by Old Norse bǫrkr (bark of a tree) and German Borke (bark). Yet, the variant πυρίνη (purínē) shows that the word is Pre-Greek.
