From dialectal Turkish fufu (likely from an unidentifiable dialectal Ottoman Turkish), from the Greek form φουβού (fouvoú), from Greek φουγού (fougoú), from dialectal Italian fogon(e) (“a square gill used in ships”)[2] (probably Genovese[3]) with assimilation of pronunciation of consonants and vowel change [o] > [u] because of the presence of [f] + feminine ending -ού (-oú), from Latin focus (“fire; family altar”).
