Etymology

From Old Church Slavonic вьсежегомъ (vĭsežegomŭ), a calque of Ancient Greek ὁλοκαυτούμενος (holokautoúmenos) (compare Late Latin holocaustum, English holocaust). Equivalent to все- (vse-) + жежа (žeža, to heat, calorify) + -ом (-om). The literal meaning is scorched from all sides.
