Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vьrtъpъ. Attested with the meaning “cave, garden” in Old Church Slavonic врьтъпъ (vrĭtŭpŭ), whence Romanian Vârtop (toponym).

By surface analysis, въ́ртя (vǎ́rtja, to turn, to whirl) + -оп (-op).
