Etymology
From French échelon (“rung, step”), from échelle (“ladder”) + -on (“suffix forming diminutives”). Échelle is derived from Latin scāla (“ladder”), from scandō (“to ascend, climb”), from Proto-Indo-European *skend- (“to jump”).
