From Proto-Permic *sareʒ́, borrowed from an Iranian language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ráyas (compare Avestan 𐬰𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬢𐬵 (zraiiaŋh) and Persian زراه (zerâh)). Cognates include Komi-Zyrian саридз (saridź).
