Etymology

Fossilized plurale tantum of Proto-Slavic *lędvьje (attested as Old Church Slavonic лѧдвиѩ pl (lędviję, loins)), probably spread from western dialects. Compare Serbo-Croatian ле́ђа pl (back). Semantic shift analogous to Bulgarian коля́но (koljáno, generation, lineage) (literally: knee).
