From *nendäg "what, what type of", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (what).

Cognate with Tatar нинди (nindi, what type of).

Compare with Kyrgyz кандай (kanday, what, what type of), which is formed following the same pattern from a different interrogative root, Proto-Turkic *ka-.
