Etymology

From пода́м (podám, to pass, to give to) + -тък (-tǎk), from an earlier Proto-Slavic *podatъkъ. Cognate with Macedonian податок (podatok), Serbo-Croatian пода́так and etymologically identical with Ukrainian пода́ток (podátok, tax, duty) (but not synonymous).
