Etymology

From пода́м (podám, “to pass, to give to”) +‎ -тък (-tǎk), from an earlier Proto-Slavic *podatъkъ. Cognate with Macedonian податок (podatok), Serbo-Croatian пода́так and etymologically identical with Ukrainian пода́ток (podátok, “tax, duty”) (but not synonymous).
