From Proto-Samic *pulkkē, borrowing from Finnish pulkka, from Proto-Finnic *pulkka.

Related to Russian бо́лок (bólok).[1] Cognates include Inari Sami pulkke, Ter Sami пуӆӆьке and Northern Sami bulki.
