Etymology
Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سودا (sevda) (compare Turkish sevda (“love”)), from Arabic سَوْدَاء (sawdāʔ, “black [bile]”), translation of the Greek μέλαινα χολή (mélaina kholḗ) from which the term melancholy is derived. Akin to севда̀лӣнка, севда̀лија, севда̀лук, сѐвди, сѐвдисати.
