Etymology

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سودا (sevda) (compare Turkish sevda (love)), from Arabic سَوْدَاء (sawdāʔ, black [bile]), translation of the Greek μέλαινα χολή (mélaina kholḗ) from which the term melancholy is derived. Akin to севда̀лӣнка, севда̀лија, севда̀лук, сѐвди, сѐвдисати.
