Etymology

Proto-Turkic *tạnu- (to know, get to know).[1]

Cognate with Kazakh тану (tanu), Kumyk танымакъ (tanımaq), Kyrgyz тааны- (taanı-), Southern Altai таны- (tanï-), Uzbek tanimoq, Khakas таны- (tanı-), Tuvan таны- (tanı-), Turkish tanımak (know somebody, recognize).

    Xattıñ tışında adresın kürew menən atayımdıñ qulın tanınım.
    As soon as I saw the address on the envelope, I recognized my father's handwriting.
    Әгәр ҙә мин яҙған кеше үҙен таныһа, оялыр тип уйлайым.
    Əgər źə min yaźğan keşe üźen tanıha, oyalır tip uylayım.
    If the person I wrote (about) recognizes himself/herself, I think s/he will be ashamed.
