From Proto-Mordvinic [Term?], possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic *teškä (something protruding: top, beard, head of corn, plant, shrub), in which case cognate with Finnish tähkä (ear), Komi-Permyak тош (toš), Udmurt туш (tuš).

Akin to Moksha тише (ťiše).
