Etymology

Borrowed from Latin ūnitās (unity), with the final consonant perhaps influenced by таз (taz, basin, pan). Unitas was originally introduced as the name of an early water closet invented by Thomas Twyford in 1884. Compare Russian унита́з (unitáz).
