Etymology
Either augmentative of Proto-Slavic *xala (“worn-out cloth”) + -ище (-ište) or borrowed from Ottoman Turkish خالیجه (halıca, “carpet”) (whence Turkish haliçe, Azerbaijani xalça). Cognate with Macedonian алишта pl (ališta).
