шаҡмаҡ

Bashkir

Etymology

From *čaqmaq (square, box, checkered pattern), perhaps from Proto-Turkic *č(i)ak- (to strike, to cut).

Cognate with Kazakh шақпақ (şaqpaq), Kyrgyz чакмак (cakmak, square, box), Uyghur چاقماق (chaqmaq, square, box, checkered pattern).

Note that the Bashkir development from this archetype looks anomalous in its first consonant - the expected form would be *саҡмаҡ (*saqmaq).
