Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ščьkъtati. Compare Old Church Slavonic скъкътати (skŭkŭtati) or скоктати (skoktati) (Russian recension), Serbo-Croatian škakljati, Slovene ščegetati, Macedonian скокотка (skokotka).
