From Proto-Mordvinic *jakšamə, from Proto-Uralic *jakša (“cool, cold”) (a front-vowel variant of *jäkše-, whence Erzya экше (ekše)). Cognates include Moksha якшама (jakšama), Estonian jahe, jahtuma, Livonian jǭ’dõ.
