Һарытау

Bashkir

Etymology

There is no consensus on the origin of the Russian name Russian Сара́тов (Sarátov).

According to one of the versions, the Russian name of the city is an adaptation of the Kypchak Sarïtaw (yellow mountain), in which case the Bashkir is an immediate descendant of that Common Kypchak place name, equivalent to Bashkir һары (harı, yellow) + тау (taw, mountain).

Compare the city's name in other Kypchak languages: Kazakh Сарытау (Sarytau), Tatar Сарытау (Sarıtaw).
