From Old Armenian առագաստ (aṙagast). The word must have also meant “room”, whence by extension “wine-pressing room” → “wine-press”.

Etymology

From the preposition առ (aṙ) + ագ- (ag-, to put on clothes) + -ստ (-st).[1][2][3] Alternatively, from the same preposition առա- (aṙa-) + Proto-Armenian *wst-, from Proto-Indo-European *us-t-h₂-ós, *us-t-h₂-ós, genitive of *wés-t-eh₂-, from *wes- (to be dressed), whence զգեստ (zgest), and cognate with Ancient Greek ἐσθής (esthḗs).[3]
