The origin is uncertain.[1][2] Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ter- (impure liquid, excrement; to defile; to decay) grown with (-x), and cognate with Old Armenian թրիք (tʻrikʻ), Russian сте́рва (stérva), Proto-Germanic *þrakjaz.[3][4][5]
