Borrowed from Middle Persian sthmbk' (stambag, oppressive; obstinate). Compare Persian ستنبه (setanbah, strong, robust, powerful, bold; litigious, unwilling to listen), Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬆𐬧𐬠𐬌𐬌𐬀 (stəṇbiia, strife) and Sanskrit स्तभ्नोति (stabhnoti, to support, sustain, prop up); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *stembʰH- (to prop up; to be firm, unmoving). See also ապստամբ (apstamb).
