Ultimately from Arabic زَرَافَة‎ (zarāfa), further etymology is disputed. Perhaps from Persian ‎ (zornâpâ, “giraffe”), a compound of ‎ (zornâ, “flute, zurna”) and ‎ (pâ, “leg”), or from Classical Syriac ܙܵܪܝܼܦܵܐ‎ (zarāfa).
