Unclear. If of Slavic origin, possibly related to Polish wiać (“to blow”) and Russian ве́ять (véjatʹ, “to blow gently”). If of Germanic origin, possibly cognate to German wehen (“to blow”) and Wehe f (“drift”). Either way, the masculine gender, given the ־ע (-e) ending, is irregular and unexplained.
