ווייע

Yiddish

Etymology

Unclear. If of Slavic origin, possibly related to Polish wiać (to blow) and Russian ве́ять (véjatʹ, to blow gently). If of Germanic origin, possibly cognate to German wehen (to blow) and Wehe f (drift). Either way, the masculine gender, given the ־ע (-e) ending, is irregular and unexplained. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
