إسكدنيا

• إِسْكِيدُنْيَا‎ (ʾiskīdunyā), إِكِّدُنْيَا‎ (ʾikkidunyā), أَكِدُنْيَا‎ (ʾakidunyā), إِيكِّيدُنْيَا‎ (ʾīkkīdunyā), إِكِّيدُنْيَا‎ (ʾikkīdunyā), and written apart

Paradoxically, it is not called in Turkish **eski dünya but yeni dünya / یڭی دنیا‎ (a meaning also widespread in the Arabic يَنْكِي دُنْيَا‎ (yangī dunyā) by the middle of the twentieth century). In إِسْكِدُنْيَا‎ (ʾiskidunyā), the first half is in fact the Persian borrowing ازگیل‎ / ezgil (“medlar”). And the second half also, دنیا‎ / dünya (“world”) being a reinterpretation of دنگل‎ (döngel, düngel, “medlar”), which is the same word blended with the stem of دونمك‎ / dönmek (“to turn around”) based on the fruit’s round form.
