اوسكدار

Ottoman Turkish

Etymology

From Byzantine Greek Σκουτάριον (Skoutárion), perhaps from Latin scūtārium, accusative of scūtārius (guard armed with a shield); however, Nishanyan does not rule out a derivation from Persian [script needed] (üsküdâr, messenger station). This city was originally called Χρῡσόπολῐς (Khrūsópolis) by the Ancient Greeks, a compound of χρῡσός (khrūsós, gold) + πόλις (pólis, city).
