Etymology

From Portuguese pango (“cannabis”), possibly influenced by Swahili bangi, ultimately from Hindi भाँग (bhāṅg). Doublet of بنج‎ (bing, “anesthetic”), from Persian بنگ‎ (bang, “henbane; hemp”).
