Etymology
Unknown. Descends from an Arabic أَثَارِي (ʔaṯārī) or perhaps أَثَارِيّ (ʔaṯāriyy), which may be derived from a form similar to Najdi Arabic and Hijazi Arabic إثري (ʔiṯri) and in turn be of the root ء ث ر (ʔ-ṯ-r) — compare Standard Arabic إِثْرَ (ʔiṯra, “as a result of”) — but the semantic development remains a mystery overall.
Other cognates include South Levantine Arabic أتاري (ʔatāri), Egyptian Arabic اتارى (ʔatāri) and اتابى (ʔatābi), Libyan Arabic تاريتا (tārīta), Najdi Arabic أثاري (ʔaṯāri) and أثِر (ʔaṯir), Hijazi Arabic أثاري (ʔatāri) and أثري (ʔatri), Gulf Arabic أثاري (ʔaṯāri) and أذاري (ʔaḏāri), Iraqi Arabic ثاري (ṯāri), and a form أفابي (ʔafābi) found in North Africa.
