Descends from an Arabic أَثَارِي (ʔaṯārī) or perhaps أَثَارِيّ (ʔaṯāriyy), which may be derived from a form similar to Najdi Arabic and Hijazi Arabic إثري‎ (ʔiṯri) and in turn be of the root ء ث ر‎ (ʔ-ṯ-r) — compare Standard Arabic إِثْرَ‎ (ʔiṯra, “as a result of”) — but the semantic development remains a mystery overall.
