Inherited from Sanskrit स्तम्भते (stambhate), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *stámbʰatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stámbʰatay, regularized as a Class 1 verb from Proto-Indo-European *st-né-bʰ-ti. Cognate with Hindi थामना (thāmnā) and Marathi थांबणे (thāmbṇe), Doublet of ٹَھڈّا (ṭhaḍḍā).
