From either Parthian [script needed] (yxš /⁠yaxš⁠/, a class of demon) or Sogdian [script needed] (ykš /⁠yakš⁠/, fiend, devil, Yaksha, ghost), ultimately from Sanskrit यक्ष (yakṣa).
