a vague term meaning grouse, any bird in the Tetraoninae subfamily, also some birds in the Perdicinae subfamily including Ammoperdix of which there are two species sand partridge (Ammoperdix heyi, حَجَل رَمْلِيّ (ḥajal ramliyy)) and see-see partridge (Ammoperdix griseogularis)
