Etymology
From Middle Persian hwmʾy (humāy, “a bird of good omen; eagle”), Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬨𐬁𐬌𐬌𐬀 (humāiia, “blessed”), Sanskrit सुमाय (su-māyá, “having excellent counsels or plans, very wise”). All composed of Proto-Iranian *māyā- (“blessing, happiness”) and the prefix *hu- (“good”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-. Related to Old Armenian հմայք (hmaykʻ, “witchcraft, divination”).
