From Indo-Aryan (compare Sanskrit कोटपाल/कोट्टपाल (koṭapāla/koṭṭapāla), Urdu کٹھوال (kṭhvāl), Hindi कोतवाल (kotvāl, “police chief”)) or Turkic (compare Chagatai کوتاوال / کوتاول).
Attested since the Ghaznavid period.
