Inherited from Helu Prakrit 𑀫𑀼𑀳𑀼𑀤 (muhuda), metathesised from Prakrit 𑀲𑀫𑀼𑀤𑁆𑀤 (samudda), from Sanskrit समुद्र (samudra). Cognate witih Sinhalese මුහුද (muhuda). Doublet of ސަމުންދުރަ (samun̊dura).
