आमंत्रण
Hindi
Etymology
Learned borrowing from Sanskrit आमन्त्रण (āmantraṇa).
Pronunciation
- (Delhi Hindi) IPA(key): /ɑː.mən.t̪ɾəɳ/, [äː.mɐ̃n̪.t̪ɾɐ̃ɳ]
Usage notes
While आमंत्रण (āmantraṇ) and निमंत्रण (nimantraṇ) both roughly correspond to "invitation", they do not denote the same kind of event. An आमंत्रण (āmantraṇ) is more formal (e.g. a talk or meeting), has fixed reasons for being sent, and usually does not involve a shared meal with the guests. However, the two words are often confused and निमंत्रण (nimantraṇ) tends to have the broader meaning.
