From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hₐzdʰí, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ₔsdʰí (2nd person singular imperative of *h₁es- (“to be”)). Cognate with Avestan ⁧𐬰𐬛𐬍⁩ (zdī, “be!”, 2nd person singular imperative of ⁧𐬀𐬵-⁩ (ah-, “to be”)), Ancient Greek ἴσθι (ísthi, 2nd person singular imperative of εἰμῐ́ (eimí, “to be”)).
