Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀺𑀤𑁆𑀤 (*gidda, “jackal”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-). This Prakrit root is probably one of a family of roots referring to scavenging animals, such as Sanskrit गृध्र “vulture”. Cognate with Punjabi ਗਿੱਦੜ (giddaṛ).
