From Ashokan Prakrit *𑀝𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀓- (*ṭokka-) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀭- (-ra-) + -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with Punjabi ਟੋਕਰਾ (ṭokrā, “basket”), Bengali টোকা (ṭōka, “straw-hat”).
