Etymology
From a merger of Sanskrit त्रिपाद (tripāda, “tripod”) and Classical Persian سه پای (sih-pāy, “tripod”). Corresponding ultimately to Proto-Indo-European *tréyes (“three”) + *pṓds (“foot”). Cognate to Bengali তেপায়া (tepaẏa).
